Factors that INFLUENCE your self-esteem!

Your level of self-esteem is based on the unique experiences and personal relationships that have made up your life. Positive experiences and fulfilling relationships help raise self esteem. Negative experiences and troubled relationships tend to lower self esteem. No single event or person can determine your level of self esteem. It develops over time, constantly changing with experience.

HOME
Relationships with your parents, grandparents,
brothers, sisters, etc. influence your self esteem.
Experiences with family from birth right up to the
present can also influence you. Characteristics
with which a child is born play an important role
throughout life. Home environment can have a
good or a bad effect on a child. Children of
emotionally mature parents are more likely to
have good emotional growth.

SCHOOL
Relationships with classmates, teachers,
administrators and counselors influence your
self esteem. Experiences with schoolwork,
extracurricular activities, sports, discipline,
etc. can also play an important role.

SOCIETY
Relationships with members of different cultures,
races and religions can influence your self esteem.
Experiences with standards and images created by
others (i.e., the media) can also influence you.
The nature of your community help shape you.
