Benjamin Franklin
Through his cleverness and hard work, Franklin rose from the slums of Boston to become not
only an accomplished writer, but an inventor. His success has made him a symbol of America.


Patrick Henry
This Virginian's legendary speeches have propelled him into American literature history.
In addition to being an accomplished speaker, Henry served as governer of Virginia for five
years.


Thomas Paine
His inspirational words during the American Revolution aroused morale among soldiers at
Valley Forge and further heightened conflict with Britain.


Thomas Jefferson
A prominent statesmen and writer, Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United
States of America, was the original author of the Declaration of Independence.


Michel-Guillaume Jean de Crevècoeur
This Frenchman wrote on the transformation of a European into an American.


Phillis Wheatley
Originally a black slave, Phillis Wheatley, wrote several poems during the Revolution
defending the American cause. One poem, in particular, expressed her patronage to
General George Washington.
