Bantheville. (*Wings of Glory calls it
Bethenville and claims he also shot down an airplane.)
Sept. 29 First balloon (16th kill, 11th balloon) at Dun; second balloon (17th kill, 12th balloon) at Briere Farm; third balloon (18th kill and 13th balloon) at Milly. (*The citizens of Murvaux, where Lt. Luke died, claimed the pilot also shot down at least two Fokker D-7s from the group that was chasing him.)
How many kills?
Giving half-credit for the drachen at Boinville on Sept. 14 and
Reville on Sept. 16, then Luke's total would be 18. If those
kills are counted as full credit, then Luke shot down 19.
Bottom line: Frank Luke participated in the destruction of at least 14 German drachen and five German aircraft. If he is also credited with shooting down two Fokker D-7s on his final flight, as the citizens of Murvaux claim, then Luke should be credited with no less than 21 victories.
