The leaves have fallen from the trees, and the warmth of the sun has fled. I sit here alone and wander back through time. So many things have come and gone, tracing their passage on my heart and mind. Who am I now? Who have I become? The face in the mirror no longer even looks like me. What happened to the little boy who dreamed of the stars?
Like ghosts from the past, the names and faces call to me now. George. Did you find your Viennese dream? Joe. Do you still live the hermits life? Sweet, gentle Mary. Did love ever find you? Wayne, my brother! Do you know how much I always loved you? Laura Jean, you haunt me still. The brother and sisters who never knew me, or even cared. The ex-wife who is still so bitter at life. The children who may never understand that the man they think they remember is not their father. All these, and many more, pass before me that I may judge myself. I have lost so much! Time has called me to account, and I have been found wanting. Yet, there is a corner of my heart where the memory of you yet abides. There it is springtime, and the birds still sing. The passage of time cannot touch you here. You will stay as I remember you now. This picture that I hold so dear is of what we should have been. Here in my memory, I lie close up against you in the night. My heart sings the sound of your name. You call to me with a tenderness that breaks my heart. All the love of the universe pours from your eyes, and I am young once more. Peace my love! Stay here with me in my heart, and fear nothing. We did love, and love is never wasted. Hand in hand the lovers walk bravely into the sunset of life. The old man in the mirror smiles sadly, and remembers. Not the way it was, but the way it could have been. © 1999 by D.
