We are always rushing from one place to the next; one person to the next. Forever in a hurry, to go where? To find what? To be with whom? What will you do with that extra two minutes you saved today at the risk of your life and someone else's? Is this new love really so much better than the old one; or just different? It seems we are forever saying goodbye. We never seem to realize what we have passed up until we are miles down the road of life. Too far past to retrace our steps, and too many hurtful words to take back. It is so much easier to just cut our loses and say goodbye.
Life goes on. The passage of the years accelerates. Now we can't even slow down long enough to say hello. Can't afford the risk. Can't get involved. No time! Not in my five year plan. The job comes first. The kids come first. I have no energy left for you. You would have to be absolutely perfect for me to even be vaguely interested. No time! Something better is bound to come along, later. No way! Goodbye! Another person I have known for years just died. Can you slow down for a funeral? Look at the evening news. Listen to your friends. See it in the movies, in the office, on the streets. We are a nation of people all alone. Crowded into cities by the millions, we are alone. We grow old alone. We die alone. I've said too many goodbyes. Please, stop running. Take a chance. Spend some time. Learn how to love, for you have certainly forgotten how. Be part of us instead of just another I. The most precious thing life has to offer is yours, if you will only say, hello! © 1999 by D. Ron Mack Written 6/7/1999 |
