LUXOR

LUXOR - Arabic = El-oksoror or El Uqsor - "the palaces"
The modern city is named after the rmains of the temple complexes of Ancient Thebes which Luxor was built over and around. Luxor is on the Eastern bank of the Nile and has also been known as *Waset = "Dominion", The City of Hundred Gates, Egyptian Thebes, to the Greeks , with the first mention being in Homer, and later as Diospolis Magna from the time of the Ptolemies onwards ( The dios being Zeus equated with Amon).
THe modern city is 600 K South of Cairo.
Ancient Luxor as opposed to Karnak was the southern area around the temples of Amun and Min, IPET-RESET, which was 3 miles south of Karnak and also known as Harem of the South. The royal palaces may have been next to the temples? Karnak and Luxor were linked by a processional way lined with statues of which only sections survive which seems to date to the Middle Kingdom period.
The Southern complex was started by Amenhotep 3 with Ramesses the Great (2) being responsible for the First Pylon and Ramesses 3 for the decoration at the rear of the temple. In later Antiquity the Romans contructed a temple of Serapis and a military camp within the temple walls, carefully blocking off the original holy of holies and placing their own camp chapel in front of the wall blocking the entrance. Several Coptic churchs and chapels were also built and finally an Islamic mosque to Abu El Haggag.
