  Charles Lowell   Charles Russell Lowell, Jr.: Born in Boston on January 2, 1835, Charles Lowell enlisted as Captain of the 6th U.S. Cavalry on May 14, 1861, then served as Colonel of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry beginning in April 1863. On October 19, 1864, Lowell was commissioned Brigadier General of Volunteers.
 
  James Savage   James Savage, Jr.: Born in Boston on April 21, 1832, James Savage enlisted as Captain of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry on May 24, 1861. Savage was promoted to Major on June 23, 1862, then Lieutenant Colonel on September 17, 1862.
 
  Stephen Perkins   Stephen George Perkins: Born in Boston on September 18, 1835, Stephen Perkins enlisted on July 8, 1861 as Second Lieutenant of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry. The following year in July, he was promoted to First Lieutenant.
 
  Robert Gould Shaw   Robert Gould Shaw: Born in Boston on October 10, 1837, Robert Gould Shaw enlisted with the Seventh New York National Guard, then served as Second Lieutenant of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry. In 1863, Shaw was appointed Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry.
 
  James Lowell   James Jackson Lowell: Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 15, 1837, James Lowell was the younger brother of Charles Lowell. On July 10, 1861, he enlisted with the 20th Massachusetts Volunteers Infantry as First Lieutenant.
 
  Edward Dalton   Dr. Edward Barry Dalton: Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on September 21, 1834, Edward Dalton graduated from Harvard in 1855 and received his M.D. degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York City, in 1858. During the war he served as a Regimental Surgeon, Medical Inspector, Medical Director, and Chief Medical Officer. In 1865, he was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel of Volunteers for his services.
