Timeline: 1917

02/01: Germany declares unrestricted submarine warfare.
02/17-03/11: British and Indian forces capture Baghdad.
03/15: Tsar Nicholas II of Russia abdicates, and a provisional government is set up following the outbreak of a Revolution during the prior week.
03/26-04/19: British attack Gaza, Palestine, but are driven back.
04/06: The United States of America declares war on Germany.
04/09-05/16: Battle of Arras; Canadians take Vimy Ridge. British casualties: 150,000, German: 100,000.
04/16-05/15: Second Battle of the Aisne. French launch a great offensive, but following a mutiny, 100,000 French soldiers are court-martialled, and many are shot.
06/07-14: Battle of Messines. The British finally take the Messines Ridge of the Ypres Salient that the Germans dominated from early in the war.
07/31-11/06: Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). Canadians take the village of Passchendaele. British casualties: more than 300,000, German: less than 200,000.
09/28-29: Anglo-Indian troops attack Ramadi.
10/31-12/09: British attack Beersheeba, Gaza, Junction Station, and Jerusalem.
11/08: With the Bolsheviks now in power in Russia, Lenin reads his Decree on Peace to the Soviet Congress. Russian armies collapse on the Eastern Front, as a civil war breaks out in Russia.
11/28: Battle of Cambrai. British make a weak advance but eventually lose ground. British casualties: 1500, German prisoners: 10,000.
12/06: Nineteen German aircraft bomb London, Dover, Ramsgate, Sheerness, and Margate.
12/15: The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ends the war for Russia.
