We got out 17-year-old cover girl Michelle Williams to reveal some behind-the-scenes details about
Dawson's Creek and her sudden star status.
Do you like the glamorous, cover-girl part of your job?
It's so unreal. When I look in the mirror after
they've done my hair and makeup, it doesn't look like the person I know. This isn't the reason I got
into acting - but it's a perk!
How do you deal with all the hype about the show?
I try to stay separated from it. I've never been
involved with something this crazy. When we first did the pilot over a year ago, I just thought it was
a gooid show and a job. Kevin Williamson was there and the whole Scream thing was starting. At
first, he was goofy, funny Kevin, then all of a sudden he was cover-of-Newsweek Kevin. All the
hype caught us by surprise. We were fooled.
Have you ever wanted to do anything else besides act?
No, nothing. It's eat, sleep, act.
It shows - you're good. What are you horrible at?
Driving. I'm hell on wheels. When I'm on the
road, stay out of the way. I had an audition the other day, and after I put gas in my tank, I back over
this bird. It's wings were stuck to the ground, and it was barely alive. So I thought, "Either I'm going
to leave this bird here and feel awful or take it to the vet and be late to my audition." Well, I put it in
my car and found a vet - and now I've got this bird, since it will never fly again!
What would your parents like to change about you?
I've got a vicious independant streak. I love
being on my own. It's been a source of a lot of agony for my parents.
When was your last date?
It's been a while since I've been on a date. I barely have enough time to
sleep. It's been so crazy. Not that it wouldn't be nice to not be alone all the time.
Who do people say you look like?
I've heard Jewel, and people have also told me that I look like
Traci Lords.
Between Pacey and Dawson, who would you go for in real life?
Hmmm. Pacey's the guy you fool
around with. Dawson's the one you take home to Mom.
Do you hang out with the cast during filming in North Carolina?
We go out to dinner occasionally
and hang out as a group. But when you work with people five or six days a week, that's plenty. I
love all three of them to death, but I need a little time to myself!
High School Confidential No one's as surprised as Michelle to be back at school (even if it is on a
set). She thought the days of hiding in a bathroom stall during lunch and escaping bullies was way in
her past. Then came Dawson's, and with it all the less-than-cool memories of growing up
not-so-popular in San Diego, Calif.
What's your best high school memory?
I really don't have one. If there were good times, I don't
remember them. I had no friends and no one to talk to! I spent every lunch in the bathroom, hiding in
a stall. It's weird to look back at school on the set, opening lockers and stuff.
What was the worst part?
I just hated the people, the atmosphere and the catty fights between the
girls. The girls just didn't understand that there was life past clothes, makeup and boys. Even the
peer pressure from the guys was bad. I always enjoyed the work, just not the social part of it. I left
after my freshman year. I was homeschooled for another year until I graduated early.
Have you ever been back?
When I visit my parents, I sometimes have to go pick up my sister,
Paige, who's at the [same] school now. When I see the girls I went to school with I still get the
shakes and my stomach hurts. I revert to this eighth-grade mentality.
Is revenge sweet?
It is nice at times. The most rewarding thing really is not so much throwing it in
their faces, but the fact that everything that is happening right now is something I've always wanted.
