Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a green jasper, speckled with red spots - which look like flecks of blood. There are many legends about the origin of the stone. One says that Bloodstone was formed when Uranus was wounded by his son Saturn. Another, more popular, tradition states that, on the hill of Calvary, some of the blood shed by Christ at his crucifixion fell upon the green jasper which lay beneath the cross, speckling it with red.

It was thought to be able to halt the flow of blood and was a favourite talisman carried by soldiers. It was used either to avoid wounds or to press on to wounds to staunch the bleeding. Its association with Mars, the ruler of Aries, and the Roman God of war, also helped soldiers - lending them courage during battle, and leading them to victory.

Bloodstone is a popular stone with athletes, they wear it to increase physical strength and for victory in competition. It has also long been used in magical spells for victory in court and in legal matters.

In the middle ages Bloodstone was a farmer's talisman and was worn, during planting, to increase the yield of the crops. Bloodstone was also hung on the arm of pregnant women to prevent miscarriage and then, later, on the thigh to ease childbirth.

In the 13th century magicians wore talismans of Bloodstone, carved with the figure of a bat, to increase the effectiveness of magical rites and spells.

Bloodstone, because it is green, is used in spells for money, wealth and business success. It is said that it attracts wealth and that a Bloodstone kept in your purse or pocket (or worn) draws money. Why don't you give it a try...!
