Forever

50 years since we were wed
we swore we'd never part,
One week later war broke out,
it almost broke our hearts.

6 long years we were apart
never heard a word.
Can you imagine nowadays,
it would be absurd.

War was over going home
at last to see my wife,
Now that its all over
we can start to build our lives.

5 a.m. we landed home
we moored between the pier,
I couldn't believe I was really home
holding back the tears.

I missed my love so very much
my little angel face,
Trying to imagine now
the passion of our first embrace.

I climbed aboard the bus
that was to take me home,
The journey there seemed endless

and I felt so alone.

As we turned the corner
of the street where we used to play,
Nothing left but rubble
on this cold and gloomy day.

My home was gone forever
was levelled to the ground,
Then fear descended on me
and my heart began to pound.

I wandered round for hours
trying to find my wife,
Then I saw her standing there
her face was drained of life.

We hugged and kissed for hours
as we huddled in the cold,
Then we fell asleep
and now my story is almost told.

When I awoke my love was gone
I couldn't believe my eyes,
My father standing over me
much to my surprise.

"Welcome home my son"
I could hear him say,
"Come with me, this is no place
for you, my boy, to stay."

"Where's my wife?" I asked him,
I knew before he replied,
"I'm sorry son to tell you
one year ago she died.

She loved you till her dying day
the last words that she said,
"Tell him that I'll wait for him."
as she laid upon her bed."

And now my life is over
I can't wait for our embrace.
Finally I am going to see
my little angel face.

And now we are together
for the life we never had,
We are now so very happy
with no more feeling sad.
