The holy tree is identified once in 12 years when Jupiter transits the sign Sagittarius and it is worshipped and cut. The wood for the body of the deities is carried on a cart that is drawn by the people from the site to Puri, Orissa. The idols are carved by the master sculptors who have been doing this for generations, and after due rituals and sanctifying prayers, are installed at the Jagannath temple in Orissa.
