Modern $2's   1974 to 1986

The 1974 series consists of 3 2-letter series (B/, R/ & U/) and 3 3-letter series (AB/, AG/ & AR/ [ up to ARE]), plus replacement notes similar to $1 notes, as the table shows.  There is also a test note (RS).   The official first day of issue is August 5 1975.    This was replaced in 1986 by the Bird series, which consists of 9 3-letters series, plus 4 X series (AR, BB, BR and EB).    This is one of the most interesting series, with a few miscues, e.g. retired governors' signatures reappeared; font varieties (big B , small/narrow B).  Official last day of issue of $2 notes is February 16, 1996, replaced by a coin dubbed 'twonie'(or 'tonie').

Modern Fives 1972 to 2004

This is the longest series, with 4 very different types, namely 1972, 1979, 1986 and 2002 series, but likely on its last leg.   The 1972 series consisted of 2 2-letter series, namely, C/, S/ plus a XA; with 11 replacements as well as one test note(RS).    (The official issuing date : December 4 1972).   The 1979 series, was to be the beginning of a new trend, i.e. all numbers and no prefix; but it turned out to be the shortest series, having gone through only one series, namely 30/,(300 to 305, to be exact,) with one replacement (310) & one test (330) (with 587 millions notes).   (The official issuing date was October 1, 1979).

The 1986 Bird series (official issuing date being April 28, 1986), meanwhile, consisted of 11 3-letter series, (EN/, EO/, EP/, FN/, FO/, FP/, GN/, GO/, GP/, AN/, HN/,) with 3 replacements (ENX, FNX, ANX,) all of which are sought after because their varieties and scarcity.       The scarcity is also brought about by the discontinuation of the distinct X notes around 1997.      The 2002 Journey series has, at mid-2005, already 4 half-series (ANV-ANZ, AOA-F, HNC-HNZ, & HOA-G) looking like the continuation of the Bird series.   Still, the biggest confusion, is the worsening infamous 'unscheduled' inserts'.      But, there are rumours that BoC, as if it has nothing else to occupy its staff's time, is 'phasing' out this 'inserts', and replacing them with Quality Control Inspection notes, starting from HOC. Of course, this is just the rumour; as usual, BoC is secretive.

Modern Ten's 1971 to 2005

The modern ten dollar notes, consisted of 3 very different series, namely, 1971, 1989 and 2001, (plus a slightedly modified 2005 Journey)   The 1971 series consisted of 3 2-letter series, namely, D/, T/, V/, with 13 asterisk notes; and 3 3-letter series, namely ED/, EE/, ET/ and FD/, with one EDX replacement series .    Morever, the series also saw the notes changing from steel engraved to lithographed. (The official issuing date was November 8 1971).

The 1989 Bird series is relatively short, only 4 and a half series (AD/, AE/, AT/, BD/, & half of BE/ [ up to BEH].)    It does have its share of scarce prefixes, namely BDH (Thiessen/Crow), BEF, ATX(Bonin/Thiessen), etc.     The 2001 Journey series, was heralded as the new era of Canadian modern papermoney, having all anti-counterfeiting measures (paper, microdesigns, etc).    Nonetheless, problems appeared almost immediately; credible conuterfeits mushroomed, even among highschool students, thanks to computer & sophisticated printers.   BoC was forced to replace the series with `most sophisticated' design and paper in May 2005.  (Actually, nothing much more than a big fat security thread.)    There is little doubt that counterfeiters will give BoC a run for its money.

Modern 20's 1969 to 2004

The modern Twenty notes consisted of 4 very different series, namely 1969, 1979(all numeric), 1991(Bird) and 2004(Journey),   with more than 4.7 billions notes, still going strong.

The 1969, the first of the modern edition consisted 3 2-letter series (E/,W/, Y/   [up to YH]) and several asterisk types, (E/,W/ & Y/).    The perennial question is: are the 14 asterisk notes all there are, or just the ones spotted so far.    The colour is a slightly darker than the later series and has a certain subdued charm.

The 1979 all numeric series, consisted of 3 series, i.e., 50, 52,(CBN) and 56(BABN), with corresponding replacement notes (510 & 516).    It also has the largest amount of notes (2.6 billions).   1979 $20's, as its $5's counterpart did produce an unintended 'controversy' among the collectors, specifically prefix collectors.    Charlton catalogue, for whatever reasons, takes the position that the series has a 4 digit prefix (e.g. 5201).    That means, for prefix collectors would have to collect a lot more notes.   In other words, for example, they would have to collect 5200, 5201, 5202.... 5266 (67 or 68 notes !, since there are 2 different types of 5205, with different signatures ) to claim they have a complete collection of 5200 series.    One could easily collect one 500...506, 506-509 (11 notes ) to say to have complete 500 series, excluding the '51' notes.

The 1991 Bird series produced arguably the most prefixes: 266 or 242, depending on the way of calculating, i.e. prefixes with different signatures counted as 1 or 2 prefixes.    It consisted of 10 series (EI/, ES/, EV/, EW/, EY/, (up to EYF), AI/, AV/, AW/, AY/(up to AYP.)                                                                                                                                     Of all the varieities or mysteries in the modern series, probably nothing is more exciting than what appeared in $20 EVA-EVH.    Somehow, the Back Plate Numer (BPN) disappeared from some of the notes.     No one has yet to explain satisfactorily why this happened.     Nonetheless, it did produce a coveted star --EVH without BPN.    Supposedly, there are only 50 such EVH notes spotted and saved.     Other scarcer EV notes have not caught on. Yet.

The 2004 Journey series received wide initial praise for its theme, design and colour.    It may be around for a while, unless counterfeiting problem forces BoC to add more futile features.      With shopkeepers' relunctance to accept $50 or $100, it may well be the most used.

Modern 50's 1975 - 2004

There are 3 series in modern fifty, namely, 1975 (RCMP musical ride), 1988 (Bird) and 2004 (Journey).    Paradoxically, they are considered by some the most beautiful (1975) & the most controversial (2004) Canadian notes.

Modern 100's 1975 - 2004

When the series begun, a Hundred was still a lot of money to 'put away', that is why not many unc's are saved.    Then, in the 90's, more and more sophiscated computers and printers created havoc for the businesses which refused to accept the $100 (and $50) notes, and for BOC which has to deal with the refusal.     BOC finally put out in 2004 a new hundred, full of security features.

This is an area which has been most interesting and exciting, but is now in the danger of falling into disrepute, because of the difficulty in identifying them.    Designation of replacement notes (for those ruined in the printing process) is standard throughout the world, as the BoC had been doing for the past 50 years, and delighting inadvertently the collectors at the same time.    But in mid-90s, BoC decided to get rid of, among other things, the practice officially to appease the private banks and save operating cost.    As a result, the designation of 'insert' which are to 'top up' the numbers has become a guessing game, with certain not quite reliable principles, depending on the printing companies (CBN or BABN).    Basically, the A or B series (printed by BABN) are to designate lower numbers as 'insert', while E, F and H (printed by CBN) high number(above 9 million).    The problem is one can never tell.   Even harder to tell is the beginning and the end of a range, because it is almost like random sampling.    The way it is done now is that collectors or dealers would obtain bricks of notes, then go through the bricks to find inserts (among other things like radar, etc.), if they are found, data would be shared, widely or selectively and tables or lists would be constructed and kept, establishing the ranges of inserts in various prefixes.    Since out of millions of bricks no more than thousands would be acquired, the ranges that are established are unreliable.   Besides, currently there is no large-scale conserted efforts in this area, relying only individual undertakings.

Modern Replacements

        * There has been a persistent but fading question through all the asterisk notes from $1 to $100, and that is whether the existing asterisk prefixes are ALL the asterisk notes BoC has produced.    The randomness of the existing prefixes invites reasonable doubt that what we see are not all that were produced.    (Take $1 for example, there are AA, AB, AL, AN, FA, FB, FG, FH, FN, FV, is there a detectable pattern ? Is it possible that other asterisk notes, say AC,AD etc. have been produced but lost or consumed totally ? )
