    George Swinburne established the Eastern Suburbs Technical College in Hawthorn, Melbourne in 1908. The first students were enrolled in 1909 with classes in carpentry, plumbing and blacksmithing. Shortly afterwards a boys' junior technical school and the first girls' technical school in Victoria were established. In 1913 it's name was changed to Swinburne Technical College in commemoration of it's founder. On 1 July 1992 the College was proclaimed Swinburne University of Technology. The University has a coat of arms based on that of the Capheaton Swinburnes. See Swinburne University
  • Hon. GEORGE SWINBURNE, M.I.C.E., M. Inst. Mech. E.; born 3 February 1861 Paradise, Benwell, Newcastle-on-Tyne 1861, educated at Royal Grammar School, Newcastle-on-Tyne, on 1881 census with parents, aged 20, a Chemical Brokers Clerk, went to Australia in 1886. He practised as an engineer and initiated several large hydraulic and gas undertakings. He was a Member of Parliament for Hawthorn from 1902 - 1913, Minister of Water Supply and Agriculture from 1904 - 1908, author of Water Acts on which Government Irrigation policy is founded and which nationalised all the waters in the rivers and streams of the State. He lived at Shenton, Kinkora Road, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Australia. He died 4 September 1928 Victoria, Australia, aged 67, Probate granted Melbourne and sealed London 28 September 1936 to widow, effects £1598, resworn at £469 (From: 'Who was Who 1916-1928'). He married 1890 ETHEL HAMER (daughter of Rev. D. JONES HAMER of Wolverhampton and Melbourne), (issue - see below).
