  • JOHN FALLA (FALLOW) SWINBURN, born 1835 Hexham, Northumberland, on 1851 census with parents, Agricultural Labourer, on 1861 census with parents, Tilemaker & Organist, married 17 October 1864 St. Joseph's, Birtley, Durham (see picture) MARY RICHMOND, born about 1832 Thirsk, York; bur. 14 April 1907 St. Joseph's, Birtley(c); the 1878 directory lists John as a Tilemaker, they were living at Richmond Place, Birtley, Durham in 1881 with their two sons, John was then a farmer of 36 acres employing one labourer; the 1900 directory lists John Falla Swinburne of 'The Croft'(b); at the 1901 census they were still at 2 Richmond Place, Birtley with 3 sons; John signed a long and detailed Will on 8 November 1910 and died 21 December 1911 whilst of 'The Croft', Birtley; probate granted 19 November 1913 to sons John Cuthbert Swinburn and Thomas Joseph Swinburn, brick manufacturers, effects £12,138, he specifically bequeathed his gold watch, his piano and his fathers old violin, which last he wished to be kept in the family to son John; his late wifes gold watch, his gold albert chain and cross, a violin, his fathers clock and his pony and phaeton to son Thomas; his late wifes diamond ring to daughter Kate, if she shall not have married again in his lifetime and to his niece Clementina Bolton, his small oak table with 3 drawers; there were also many legacies to others and his "Radcliffe Street Property" to his grandson Oswald; he had also added a codicil on 27 June 1911 revoking the bequest of the violin to Thomas and bequeathing it instead to grandson Oswald, he also increased some of the legacies (issue - see below)
