Sir JAMES SWINBURNE, 9th Baronet, F.R.S., M. Inst.C.E., born 28 February 1858 at Inverness, Scotland. He was a pioneer of electrical engineering and of plastics, educated at Clifton College. He trained as an engineer in Tyneside from 1874-1881 then practiced as a Consultant Engineer. (At the 1881 census he was living at 8 Millicent Terrace, Gateshead, Durham, a Mechanical Draughtsman, aged 23, a lodger with the family of Wm. Johnson). He was a versatile inventor who made a great contribution to patent jurisprudence. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1934 on the death of his kinsman Sir Hubert Swinburne. He resided at Bury Hill House, Logmore Lane, Dorking, Surrey, England, and also at Balholm Grange, Branksome Park, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. He died 30 March 1958, aged 100, probate granted 5 September 1958 to widow and solicitor, effects £43,367. (For photograph and biography see
