  • RALPH SWINBURN, of Fugar Bar, Waggonway-wright, Railway Inspector and Pioneer Railway Engineer in America; born 4 August 1805 Lamesley, Durham, baptised 15 December 1805 Whickham, Durham, (listed as 2nd son of Robert and Isabel); at the age of 12 he went to work with his father on a small coal-hauling railway near Newcastle-upon-Tyne where he met George Stephenson, builder of the famous steam locomotive 'Rocket', Headstone of Ralph and Mary Swinburnhe later worked with him on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, of which he was superintendant, being contracted to lay part of the track which became the first line to run a passenger car; he was employed on the Liverpool and Manchester for 2 years then the Bolton and Leigh line where he remained for 12 years, eventually having the management of the entire road; he was next employed on the Manchester and Leeds and on leaving his workmen presented him with a gold watch and chain engraved with the inscription 'Presented to Ralph Swinburn by the plate layers and others under his charge, on the Manchester and Leeds Railway, as a token of respect and esteem, Oct.9,1847'; he married on 13 May 1826 Haughton le Skerne MARY PATTISON, born 1801, they had a large family and were living in Chowbent, Lancashire in 1850 at the time when Ralph, having a desire to live under a Republican form of government left England for America, he departed on 8 November 1850 and landed at New Orleans on 10 January 1851; by 7 February 1851 he was employed by the Winifrede Mining and Manufacturing Company in the Kanawha Valley, West Virginia; he was involved in various railroad building projects for this and then the Paint Creek Coal and Iron Mining and Manufacturing Company and he was the first 'railroad engineer' (engine driver) in western Virginia; in 1851 Ralph sent for his family and they arrived at Winifrede on 4 July 1851; he worked for 5 years in the railroad business then in 1856 retired to a farm in Davis Creek, Kanawha County, in the same year he was ordained a minister in the Baptist church, having preached for many years both in England and America; Mary died on 2 June 1885 and Ralph remarried when nearly 80 ELIZABETH WALL, a widow some years his junior, who cared for him during the later years of his life which were troubled with illness and misfortune; he died on 7 June 1895 at Davis Creek just short of his 90th birthday; he and Mary are buried in the family plot (see picture) at Graceland Cemetery near Ruth, West Virginia (issue - see below)
