MATTHEW SWINBURN, born c.1852 Winlaton, Durham (no GRO birth entry); married 3 May 1873 St. Andrew's, Newcastle aged 23 MARY ANN OLIVER (daughter of JOHN OLIVER, Chain Maker, also known as 'Coffee Johnny', famous bare knuckle fighter), born c.1854 Winlaton; married aged 19 (witnesses at the marriage were Joseph Hartlet/Kelley? and James Welch); they are on the 1881 census with daughter Ellen at 33 Ramsay's Buildings, Chopwell, Durham, Matthew a Coal Miner aged 28; on the 1891 census at Gosforth Row, Longbenton with 4 children; and on the 1901 census at Cowpen in son Matthew's household and with daughter Sarah; Mary Ann's father spent his last days with the family at their home in Cowpen Quays until his death on 5 April 1900 (issue - see below)

    Matthew Swinburn b.1882 Throckley

  • MATTHEW SWINBURN, born (reg. Q4 Castle Ward) 1882 Throckley, Northumberland; on 1891 census with parents, aged 8; the family have a photograph dated 8 August 1898 of Matthew aged 15 years, another in military uniform probably taken prior to WW1 (see picture to right) and a third taken at the end of the war with 'Matt Swinburn late 9th N.5' (9th Northumberland Fusiliers 5th army - they served at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, France, Easter 1917 then at Ypres) on the back, the card was posted to Mrs. Moore, Rosedean Villas, Cramlington; Matthew married (reg. Q3) Morpeth 1899 DINAH HESLOP, born c.1884 Big Broughton, Cumberland; they are on the 1901 census at 101 Bowes Street, Cowpen, with Matthew's parents, sister Sarah and son John, Matthew was head of the household aged 18, a Coal Miner Hewer and Dinah aged 17 (issue - see below)

    Margery and John Moore

  • MARGERY SWINBURN, born 14 March 1886 Blayden Haugh, Durham; on 1891 census with parents, aged 5; on 1901 census (as Marjory Swinburne) aged 16 at Whickham, Brickyard Labourer; married 14 March 1903 Horton, Northumberland JOHN MOORE, both were living at Hartford Colliery, John a Miner; he was injured in France in World War I suffering from shell shock and mustard gas damage and was eventually sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Cosham, Portsmouth for long term mental and physical treatment; their youngest daughter Irene was born at their home at 21 Beatty Road, Bedlington, near Morpeth in 1926; Margery came south to be with her husband c.1929/30 with 8 of their 10 children, taking lodgings in the Portsmouth area then moving to 14 Hambledon Road, Waterlooville where they stayed for many years, Margery's Geordie accent gave her many problems in being understood especially as she was also partially deaf; she suffered much from ill health in her later years and died 2 January 1955 Waterlooville, Hampshire aged 69; buried Hulbert Road Cemetery, Waterlooville; John was eventually released from hospital to live with his family again, he died in 1966 aged 83 and was buried with his wife
