Y2K Crisis Analysis
TIME BOMB 2000
by Ed and Jennifer Yourdon
The best-known book that explains what Y2K means to all of us. More of a Y2K awareness book than one on Y2K survival techniques. Well organized and easy to understand, this book is the one to lend to your doubting Uncle Henry or your skeptical spouse. Cautiously optimistic but thorough in its analysis of the magnitude of the Y2K threat. Highly recommended.
THE MILLENNIUM BUG: HOW TO SURVIVE THE COMING CHAOS
by Michael Hyatt
Excellent overview of the systemic Y2K threat to ordinary individuals and families, a very useful complement to the Ed Yourdon book, though somewhat more pessimistic (realistic?).
WHAT WILL BECOME OF US? COUNTING DOWN TO Y2K
by Julian Gregori
Pessimistic Y2K scenario analysis, full of practical tips on Y2K survival. Includes very useful appendices listing Y2K survival resources. Clever name for the author.
THE Y2K PERSONAL SURVIVAL PLAN HANDBOOK
by Michael Ennis
The author views Y2K as the precursor of major global political and social changes that will force people to accept a tougher way of life. The book functions as a handbook for personal Y2K survival and lists many Y2K survival resources.
Rural Relocating
COUNTRY BOUND!
by Tom and Marilyn Ross
The one book to buy if you're a city person planning to move to the country to escape the urban violence of Y2K. Absolutely loaded with marvelously practical, useful information that will tell you how to prosper in a rural environment. Vital information on choosing the right locality, logistics of moving, adapting to rural life, social activities, starting a successful rural business, and most important of all, how to fit in well in your new rural area.
Lots of maps and charts and graphs and tons of resource references. If you've never lived in a rural area, this book is indispensable. Most highly recommended.
Basic Self-Sufficient Living
>READER'S DIGEST NEW COMPLETE DO-IT-YOURSELF MANUAL
How will you fix things that break or wear out in your home after January 1, 2000? If Y2K destroys the division of labor, as it is very likely to do, you'll be on your own; you'll have to do it yourself or do without. This book is absolutely essential to maintaining a home with your own tools and effort, full of practical information on all aspects of being the home Mr. Fixit.
It's written for the novice in easily understood terminology and it's loaded with hundreds of step-by-step illustrations. Most highly recommended; a must-have book.
THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF COUNTRY LIVING
by Carla Emery
As the title says, this is an encyclopedia of self-sufficient living; 800 pages of collected wisdom, much of which is relevant to Y2K survival.
BACK TO BASICS: HOW TO LEARN AND ENJOY TRADITIONAL AMERICAN SKILLS
by The Readers' Digest
Excellent comprehensive guide to productive low-tech living using traditional skills and resources. Hundreds of projects with numerous step-by-step illustrations. An invaluable source of Y2K survival information. Most highly recommended; if you buy only one book for Y2K survival, this is the one.
HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT ELECTRICITY
by Anita Evangelista
Concise, easy to read information on living well "off the grid". Explains solar power, both active and passive, and non-electric ways to pump water and refrigerate food. Also deals with battery charging and generating your own power. Includes valuable resource list and a bibliography of other books of similar interest.
THE HOME WATER SUPPLY: HOW TO FIND, FILTER, STORE AND CONSERVE IT
by Stu Campbell
This book tells you just what the title says. Very handy information for rural living.
Food
SQUARE FOOT GARDENING
by Mel Bartholomew
A classic book I used for home gardening 10 years ago; highly recommended. Urban Y2K survivors take note: the author asserts that a lot of vegetables can be easily grown in a very small area if you know how to do it, and I can tell you he's right.
MAKING THE BEST OF BASICS
by James Talmadge Stevens
Confused about a Y2K survival food storage plan? Don't know where to start? This book will tell you all you need to know. Includes an appendix of over 2000 entries on food storage and emergency preparedness resources.
HEIRLOOM VEGETABLE GARDENING: A MASTER GARDENER'S GUIDE TO PLANTING, GROWING, SEED SAVING AND CULTURAL HISTORY
by William Woys Weaver
A beginner's comprehensive guide to growing 280 varieties of 37 vegetables using open-pollinating, non-hybrid seeds. "Heirloom" refers to gardening with traditional non-hybrid seeds, as was done throughout human history until the past several decades. The author also includes many wonderful recipes for vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, potatoes, peas, peppers, beans, and many more. Although this book is not aimed at the Y2K survivalist, it contains a wealth of vital information about growing your own vegetables if hybrid seeds are not available. 100 color photographs and 240 line drawings.
SEED TO SEED
by Suzanne Ashworth
Excellent book on non-hybrid seeds; good companion to the Weaver book above.
ROOT CELLARING: NATURAL COLD STORAGE OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
by Mike and Nancy Bubel
Most fruits and vegetables grow only in the warm months. How can we store them during the winter other than canning or drying them? A valuable guide to storing food without artificial refrigeration.
HOW TO DEVELOP A LOW-COST FAMILY FOOD STORAGE SYSTEM
by Anita Evangelista
A low-key, common sense approach to food storage for families, including those without a lot of cash to spend.
Medical
AMERICAN RED CROSS FIRST AID AND SAFETY HANDBOOK
A comprehensive guide to crucial first aid measures from cuts and bruises to heart attacks, with instructions and drawings for layman home use. Professional medical help may not be readily available in 2000 and beyond; this book could save the life of someone vital to you. If you don't have it or something like it, get a copy.
WHERE THERE IS NO DENTIST
by Murray Dickson
A grim thought for Y2K survival but one that should be considered.
Survival Skills
LIFE AFTER DOOMSDAY
by Bruce D. Clayton
Understanding the fundamentals of survival after a nuclear war or other major disaster.
THE SAS SURVIVAL HANDBOOK
by John Wiseman
A survival bible, easy to read, with many good diagrams, graphics and lots of information. Well recommended.
THE SAS URBAN SURVIVAL HANDBOOK
by John Wiseman
The definitive guide to survival in the urban jungle. Absolutely essential for Y2K survival if you plan to remain in the city after January 1, 2000.
Fiction
LUCIFER'S HAMMER
by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
The very best Y2K novel and it's not even about Y2K! The book relates the total social breakdown caused by a massive comet smashing into the earth. The effects of this catastrophe are essentially the same as those produced by a Y2K computer meltdown: no power, no water, no food, no heat, no law, no civilization and for most people, no hope. A real eye-opener regarding social collapse. Most highly recommended.
IT'S ALREADY TOO LATE
by Jason Kelly
Tom Clancy-like novel of one man's attempt to conquer the worldwide chaos brought on by Y2K. Good depiction of the violence and social disruption that result from the collapse. Read it and consider your personal situation regarding Y2K survival.
Y2K: THE MILLENNIUM BUG
by Don L. Tiggre
The chronicle of events surrounding a small group of people brought together by the unraveling of society.
