This Just In! |
June 27, 2000- I was surfing around lookin for dis and dat when I found what appears to be the Official Slippery Rock Area School District Homepage! Click here! |
July 18, 2000--Marla Wagner, principal of the Area Elem., has accepted a job with the Plum School District. First the superintendent, now a principal. The meltdown continues. School starts in 40 days. Who will be next? Take the POLL!! Rumor has it that there may be a work-stoppage this fall if the board continues to insist on take-backs in the current negotiations. Stay tuned. There will be a Special Meeting of the Board on Tue Aug. 8 at 8pm at the MS. |
August 8, 2000-- Check out this article about our "old" superintendent in the Post-Gazette! Funny how he can't be reached for comment by the press in his new district either!!! Click Here |
NEWS FLASH!! Aug. 8, 20 00 Spinella out! Tonight the position of Director of Curriculum and Staff Development was eliminated and a new position, Assistant Superintendent, was added. A search is underway. Wagner out - Cokain in. Regular pay + 25 dollars a day. |
August 8, 2000- All ya'll who voted for Spinella on the "Who's next" poll were right, he was next. Now there is a new poll. Click here! The results were; Allen 2 votes, Beil 1 vote, Francisco 4 votes, Makarevich 9 votes, Martin 11 votes, Spinella 7 votes |
August 15, 2000- Rumors have it that Dennis Spinella, former Dir. of Curriculum and Staff Devlopment, has been offered a 3rd grade teaching job at Moraine. |
August 18, 2000- Many of you have expressed concern over the state of our curriculum in the district. Check out my take on the problems by visiting CURRENT ISSUES. |
NEWSFLASH Oct. 6, 2000-8AM -Last night district teachers abstained from voting on the Fact Finding report. Teachers felt that our Board contaminated the process by voting on and releasing the report before the 10 day consideration period, contending that the Board's release violated the state labor relations board regulation. Union members believe the fact finding process was over because of the board's early release and opened the door to consider other actions. During last night's meeting a strike authorization vote was approved 133 to 5. |
Oct. 11, 2000- There will be an informational meeting at Moraine on Thur. Oct. 12 at 7:3pm. There will be a member of the teachers union there to discuss the Fact Finding report. I hear from someone close to the negotiations, that unless the Board acts soon, there will be a strike sooner rather then later. The Boards inaction seems to be causing fustrustion among the teachers. I urge everyone to call a Board member and ask questions! |
NEWSFLASH Oct.11,2000, 4pm- Gossip has it that our Board is in salary negotiations with a female superintendent candidate! It is rumored that she has a background and interest in Core Knowledge! |
Oct. 13, 2000- There will be a special meeting of the P.T.C.C. at the Area Elem on Monday, Oct. 16th at 6pm concerning the possible teachers strike. Also don't forget about the Board meeting that same night at 7:30 at Har-Mer. |
NEWS FLASH!!!! Fri. Oct. 13, 2000- According to my sources, if the Board votes NO to the Fact Finding Report this Monday night, our teachers will go on strike beginning Tuesday Oct. 24th! If however, the Board accepts the report and votes YES, and allows the union members to consider that vote in a legitimate manner, then this could well be a basis to avoid a work stoppage. |
NEWS FLASH! Oct. 13,2000- Word is that we will be hiring a new Superintentent! She is Dr. Lee Beaton from the York City School District, is a Core Knowledge expert and will be making $101,000 a year! |
NEWS FLASH! Oct. 17, 2000- So school for seniors will continue, despite a work stoppage (Hope those administrators have their teaching certificates up to date). Nothing like using our children as pawns. Somehow it doesn't seem fair to excuse K-11 from attendance, but require the seniors to cross a picket line. And I suppose any senior who doesn't attend during the strike won't be given the 180 days of instruction required by law. Also, I just heard from a parent who called Mr. King's office for more information, as the letter sent home instructed, and it seems that the person who answered didn't know anything about the letter. So much for getting any info from our district! More later..... |
Oct. 18, 2000- Ok. What is going on here? Yesterday a letter (Press Release) went home to the parents of the Har-Mer children. Why didn't it go home to all of the other parents in the district? I have several problems with this letter. First it was a press release and not a letter to the parents. Second, this letter says that the Board has made repeated requests to resume negotiations, which is just not so. Third, why would the School Board use our children to spread propaganda? What is with these guys? How low will they go? If you can shed any light on this letter and why only some paremts got it, please let us know on the Message Board. |
News Flash! Oct.20, 2000- 10am- According to what I am hearing, the negotiation meeting last night didn't go well. The Board offered $1450 in keeping with their position that the teachers get what Grove City teachers got . The union responded, fine, but the teachers in Grove City settled for $1450 because they got paid dental ins. as well as other benefits that our teachers don't have, such as a shorter work year. It is my understanding that our Board is only willing to give them the $1450 and is unwilling to consider the other items Grove City teachers got. This is all second hand info. For all I know it could be all wrong. When dealing with something this important, I don't like to report this kind of "gossip", but judging from the hits this morning, you guys are very concerned. Despite assurances by the "powers that be" that I would be informed of what took place last night, as of yet,I have not heard from these official sources. If and when I do, I will pass along that information. |
News Flash Oct. 21, 2000 4:30p I hear that there is reason to have cautious optimism that the work stoppage may be avoided! It appears that some movement has been made by both sides. Remember they will be meeting again tomorrow. STAY TUNED. Also, good luck teachers! |
Newsflash Oct 23, 2000 9:30am- Resolution was reached by both sides during last nights meeting. If the Board (read this as - Mr. King, the district's attorney) agrees to this agreement today, it becomes a tentative agreement and both sides will vote on it Monday Oct. 30. If both sides vote yes, then the teachers will have a contract. If the board agrees to it today and they call it a tentative agreement, the strike for Tuesday will be resended, and a new strike will be called for Tue. Oct. 31, just in case the Board rejects the agreement on Oct. 30. Stay tuned. |
Newsflash Oct 23, 2000 9:30am- Resolution was reached by both sides during last night's meeting. If the Board (read this as - Mr. King, the district's attorney) agrees to this agreement today, it becomes a tentative agreement and both sides will vote on it Monday Oct. 30 ( they have to wait a week so Mr. Giesler gets back in town). If both sides vote yes, then the teachers will have a contract. If the board agrees to it today and they call it a tentative agreement, the strike for Tuesday will be rescinded, and a new strike will be called for Tue. Oct. 31, just in case the Board rejects the agreement on Oct. 30. Stay tuned. |
Newsflash Oct. 23, 2000 2:30p- The teachers and the Board have reached a tentative mediated agreement! Both sides have agreed to vote on this agreement on Oct. 30. The strike has been called off for Tue. Oct. 24.. However, the union has given strike notice for Oct. 31. if either side votes no to this tentative agreement. Stay tuned and call a board member to encourage them to vote yes. |
Oct. 27, 2000- As most of you know we have a new Superintendent. Dr. Beaton will start around Nov. 23, 2000. Because of this new hire I have updated the poll that asks who will be the next to leave. Click here if you want to change your vote, I know I will be changing mine! |
Oct. 27, 2000- There will be a Special Meeting on Monday, Oct.30 at 7:30 in the MS library to act on the mediated proposal for the new teacher contract. |
Newsflash Oct. 30, 2000 9:15p- Our teachers have a new contract! The Board voted 5-4 to approve it with Adams, Angerett, Youngman and Christmann voting no. The teachers voted yes by an overwhelming majority. Tune in to tomorrow's Board Update for the details. |
Jan. 18, 2001- In the last Board Update I mentioned that the board has asked the Superintendent to prepare a report on what a year round school calendar would look like. I also mentioned that the parents in Dr. Beaton's "old" district, York, were against year round schooling. Judging by Beaton's response to the Board concerning the issue, she seem to be a proponent of the concept. Well, they passed it in York yesterday, and the parents are not happy to say the least. Read about the problems with this issue in The York Daily Record, click here. |
NEWSFLASH! 2-12-01 1:45pm Word on the street is that the Butler Co. court is going to send the SR school district request to reapportion the voting districts back to the board for reconsideration. Stay tuned! |
RETRACTION 3-22-01 In the 3-20-01 Board Update I stated that Brad Smith had suggested that the Act 48- Staff Development document vote be put off until the next board meeting. I chided him for being on the Act 48 Committee and not attending the meetings, implying that he might not have wanted to put off the vote if he had attended the meetings. I figured he was on the committee because his name was on some of the committe's materials (name tag,etc..). I have since learned that this was a mistake on the part of the district and Mr. Smith was never a member of the Act 48 Committee. I apologize to Mr. Smith. |
