Life
Nothing moved
in the cool, still air, as if the entire world were holding it's breath.
The sun shone brightly, sprinkling patches of light through the leaves
that were just beginning to show the colors of fall.
Quiet footsteps
moved carefully through the grass, dreading each step as if the soft noise
would shatter the day. A small sound startled the bright blue eyes glancing
up quickly to watch the nervous sparrow fly away. Every muscle froze as
the eyes scanned the area for signs of more movement. As breath was slowly
let out of it's held position, the footsteps quietly resumed their course.
After a moment
the footsteps eased to a stop, the eyes looked all around as a small hand
brushed light brown hair out of the way. The cry of an eagle far above
touched the listening ears as time froze under the trees. All was well
and the feet continued on their way.
Nearing a
quiet glad the small body crouched down, eyes peering hopefully as ears
listened for the slightest sound. There in the shelter of the trees lay
a doe, recently with child, looking back with large brown eyes, into the
blue eyes she knew so well. Curled up next to her was a new born fawn,
eyes closed, sleeping peacefully as it dreamed of the awaiting world.
The young
boy smiled in approval and just as quietly as he came, slipped away to
join the world that awaited him.
