SPACE: 1999 - a postmodern look at popular television of the 1970's.
The Andersons used a band innovative writers, who in retrospect seem to have been significantly caught up in the prevailing discourse on the development of the Western world from structuralim to the postmodernity, using the rather well-suited format of a technocratic society based on the moon getting thrown into the unknown as a consequence of the "collapse of modernity".
In retrospect the series seems to a great extent to reflect the contemporary development of continental philosophy, illustrating in a fascinating manner central ideas and dictums elaborated by Adorno, Arendt, Derrida, Foucault, Kristeva, Lyotard and so on.
Perhaps partly due to the politico-economical climate and partly due to psychological issues having impact on the production, SPACE: 1999 is a series of remarkable pessimistic and fatalistic perspectives, although with hopes for mankind of finding a new home. This site is one of many devoted to SPACE:1999. Feel free to join the alpha1999 and space1999 discussion groups.

As a consequence of the global success of SPACE: 1999 in 1975/76, it was decided that they should make a second series (another 24 episodes). The format was drastically changed, however, making it into a completely new series with only superficial relation to the original SPACE: 1999. In 1977 it was decided that there should be no third series.
SPACE: 1999 was released on video in 1992/96 by Polygram/ITC for European consumers (PAL format).
