What keeps you going as a Christian through the trials of life ?
Are you going through a dry desert and looking forward to an "ice cold" drink at the other side ?
Fortunately for the Christian the Bible gives us lots of encouragement to be steadfast in our Christian life.
We have a goal that is not of this world. Forget earthly ambition !
Paul telling of his motivation writes:
Philippians 3: 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have
already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which
Christ Jesus took hold of me.
13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what
is ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called
me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from
there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his
control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his
glorious body.
and in Hebrews
Hebrews 10: 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for
he who promised is faithful.
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds.
25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of
doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the
Day approaching.
And what is this day approaching ?
This is the day of Jesus' second coming
1 Thessalonians 4: 13
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep,
or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope.
14 We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that
God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
15 According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still
alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede
those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command,
with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the
dead in Christ will rise first.
17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up
together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we
will be with the Lord forever.
18 Therefore encourage each other with these words.
Our inheritance or citizenship in heaven is described in Revelation 21 and 22
Rev 21: 9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the
seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride,
the wife of the Lamb."
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high,
and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God.
11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that
of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.
12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels
at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes
of Israel.
13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on
the south and three on the west.
14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the
names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure
the city, its gates and its walls.
16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He
measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length,
and as wide and high as it is long.
17 He measured its wall and it was 144 cubits thick, by man's measurement,
which the angel was using.
18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure
as glass.
19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind
of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire,
the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,
20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite,
the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh
jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.
21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single
pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent
glass.
22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty
and the Lamb are its temple.
23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the
glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.
24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will
bring their splendor into it.
25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night
there.
26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it.
27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what
is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the
Lamb's book of life.
Rev 22: 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as
clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of
the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding
its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of
the nations.
3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb
will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.
4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp
or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they
will reign for ever and ever.
To enter many countries these days as well as a passport you need a visa.
The Bible talks of the visa or seal we already have showing us we have this inheritance of a place in heaven being the Holy Spirit:
Eph 1: 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word
of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked
in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption
of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.
So look at yourself as God looks at those who have put their trust in him
1 Cor 3: 16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and
that God's Spirit lives in you?
17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's
temple is sacred, and you are that temple.
1 Cor 6: 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
May we be a temple fit for God to dwell in.
