Grade 6 Math

Policies/Expectations/Study Hints

Mrs. Tokle

Welcome to Grade 6 Math!  Would you believe me if I told you that you will like math more in June than you do today?  Your excitement and enthusiasm for learning, as well as your effort and willingness to face challenges will make achieving that goal a reality.  Math is my favorite subject, and I hope that by the end of the school year it will be yours as well.  We will focus on graphs, geometry, measurement using the metric and standard systems, fractions, decimals, number theory, problem solving, ratio, proportion, percent, and integers.  You might be thinking, “That sounds difficult!”  I hope you are thinking, “I can’t wait!”

Several strategies you should use to make the year successful:

·  Know the math facts, especially the multiplication tables. (For practice, quiz yourself or have someone in your family quiz you!)

·  Know how to perform basic operations (+, -, x, and especially long division).

·  Be prepared for class (agenda book, pencil, eraser, correcting pen or marker, textbook, poly file, notebook, homework, calculator, highlighter, etc.  No pens for math assignments.).

·  Take notes in class.  Highlight and review your notes before beginning your homework.

        ·  Participate in class discussions.

·  Work respectably, cooperatively and responsibly in class and in groups.   (Remember, you are graded on Conduct and Effort!)

·  Complete your homework every night, Monday through Friday.  ALWAYS show your work unless the problem requires mental math.  (Homework should take approximately 30 - 45 minutes.  Daily homework is 10% of your grade.  Have your parents sign your homework if you have worked for 30- 45 minutes doing your best and you still haven’t finished.)

·        Have your parents sign all quizzes and tests.  Bring the tests and quizzes to school for your file.

·        Remember, Dynamath counts as a take-home quiz and your parents can check it for you!

·  Work on long-term assignments or projects every day.  Be sure to note them in your agenda book as a daily assignment. (Don’t wait until the last minute!)

·  Check with a Study Buddy for assignments missed when you are absent.  (Make sure you have the phone number of two students in your class.)

·   Check my Web site for assignments:  http//www.geocities.com/sealbeach67

·  ASK QUESTIONS WHEN YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND!  (Ask questions in class or during homeroom the next morning.)

·  Stay for extra help on Monday after school.

·  Retake tests in school within a week of the test.    (In order to retake a test, you must stay for an extra help session on Monday.  You receive the higher grade!)

         ·  Stay organized   (Use Homeroom time to organize your binders, lockers,

           pocket portfolios, pencil pouch, etc.)

·  Keep this list handy to help you remember how to do well in math!
