James and Antoine, two guys in their early twenties, sit at the far wall of a small diner. They're sipping the remains of coffee and orange juice, and talking like the oldest of friends. One moves his hands wildly as he talks, like he's conducting a symphony in his head. The other's cool and laid back, taking everything in with a smooth nod and an easy smile. This is the modest Montreal duo that has turned their song "Some Kinda Wonderful" into a hit single all over the world. These are the boys of SKY, and they are already international stars.
"We met in Montreal in'92," remembers Antoine (the relaxed one). "We were both enrolled in MusicTech Inc., a music engineering school." "We each thought the other was a freak," pipes in James. "But that's why we liked each other: We were the only two freaks in the class. Everybody else looked like an accountant." The two quickly joined forces and began working on their own music. "We were both more into producing and didn't want to sing at first. But we couldn't afford anybody, and later we found that we were the only ones who could do the songs the way we wanted them done."
They worked out of a studio in a house they rented together, though now that they have a big record contract they live in separate pads. How did they handle living and working together? "We had very different schedules," says Antoine. "James was more of a morning person, and I was a night person. Plus James was a really great cook. He once did this great barbecue shrimp dish for a party that Natalie Imbruglia is still talking about [Ms. Imbruglia was not available for comment]."
The skynamic duo's big break came in 1997 with the release of an EP demon, which featured the song that brough them international attention: "America" (there's a brand new version of it on the new album). "America" was played on a record number of stations in Quebec, and it even went to video. "We worked so hard on it from start to finish," remembers James. "A lot of our hopes were riding on that song."
Their hopes were rewarded - big time. The boys were quickly snatched up by EMI, who immediately put them to work on the full length, debut CD, Piece of Paradise. They were teamed up with Peter Mokran, who has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and R. Kelly. Being as busy as they are, do they have time for girls? "We've both just come out of some killer long-term relationships," says Antoine, "so we're not really looking right now. But when you're travelling as much as we do, you never know who you might meet. I'm looking for someone really dynamic, cool, and fun. They should love music, so they can understand what I put into." I nervously ask if there has ever been any competition for the same girl. "No, we're too different," laughs James. "He likes them more quiet, I like them really out there and in your face." The boys of Sky: one's wild, one's cool, both are totally talented. Forget about the sky being the limit, because for these two, there are no limits.
