WALTER MOSLEY

Walter Mosley was born in 1952 in South Central L.A. by a Jewish mother from the Bronx and a black father from Louisianna. He attended college and afterward moved to Vermont. Here he moved from one job to another. He finally settled on a job as a computer programmer working on IBM mainframes. He did not begin writing until his mid 30's. He said that he only started writing because, "basically, I just enjoyed it." His first novel was "Devil in a Blue Dress" which was published in 1990. It was nominated for an Edgar for the best mystery of the year and became a movie starring Denzel Wahington. Since then he has published 5 more novels, has film and television projects in the works, and his books are published in eight different countries. "Devil in a Blue Dress" became a movie starring Denzel Washington. Mosley lives in New York City and is a member of the executive board of the PEN American Center, where he founded the open book committee, a project whose purpose is to actively encourage publishers to hire members of minority groups at all levels of publishing. He has also served on the board of directors of the National Book Awards, Poetry Society of America, and Manhattan Theater Club. He was also past president of the Mystery Writers of America.
