A buddha is one who does not seek. In seeking this, you turn away from it. The principle is the principle of nonseeking; when you seek it, you lose it.
If you cling to nonseeking, this is the same as seeking.
If you cling to nonstriving, this is the same as striving.
Thus the Diamond Cutter Scripture says,
"Do not grasp truth, do not grasp untruth, and do not grasp that which is not untrue."
"These pair of hands does the same work as mine ."
"You clear the impurities of others' households; and I clear the impuritees of others' hearts and minds. To me, these two tasks are just as noble and important. Sunita- you and I are the same."
- Buddha to Sunita
"Where there is seeing, there is only the seeing, there is no see-er. Where there is listening, there is only the listening, there is no listener. Where there is feeling, there is only the feeling..."
-Buddha to Bahiya
When the one who seeks is sought and not found, the seeker seeking what is sought ceases.
"From attachment comes grief; from attachment comes fear. Whoever is free from attachment knows neither grief nor fear."
- The Buddha
Those who see me as form, Those who follow me by words, Waste their efforts For those people do not see me. From the good law, should the Buddhas be seen, Reality is the guide, The good law is not to be imagined, For it is impossible to imagine it.
Stars, darkness, light, a phantom, a dewdrop, a bubble, A dream , a lightning flash, a cloud This is how all things should be seen.
- Thus spoke Buddha Sakyamuni
Listen to the teachings like a deer listening to music Contemplate them like a northern nomad sheering sheep; Meditate on them like a dumb person savoring food; Practice them like a hungry yak eating grass; Reach their result, like the sun coming out from behind the clouds."
Padampa Sangye
Milarepa's disembodied voice was heard by All...O Rechung, dearest to my heart. Abandon concepts, realize all-encompassing emptiness, and dissolve all duality! This is my very last will. The evening had set in when the funeral pyre had burnt out. Expecting wondrous relics, all went to sleep next to it. In the early dawn Rechungpa dreamt of Dakinis carrying away a sphere of light. Waking the others up, they looked into the cremation house...Everyone present saw how the Dakinis flew upward into the sky, carrying away the sacred relics, leaving nothing behind in the cremation cell.
"Best of the paths is the eightfold, best of the truths the four; best of the virtues is freedom from attachment; best of the people is the one who sees. This is the path; there is no other that leads to the purifying of insight.
Follow this path, and Mara will be confused. If you follow this path, you will end your suffering. This path was preached by me when I became aware of the removal of the thorns. You yourself must make the effort. The perfected ones are only preachers. Those who enter the path and practice meditation are released from the bondage of Mara."
The Buddha
The Normal Mind Is the Way
The way does not require cultivation; just don't defile it. What is defilement? As long as you have a fluctuating mind, artificiality, or compulsive tendencies, all of this is defilement.
If you want to understand the way directly, the normal mind is the way. What I call the normal mind is free from artificiality: in it there is no right or wrong, no grasping or rejection, no extinction or permanence, no banality or sanctity. A scripture says, 'Neither the conduct of ordinary people nor the conduct of saints, it is the conduct of enlightening beings.'
- Ma-tsu
"Awareness is the path of immortality; thoughtlessness is the path of death. Those who are aware do not die. The thoughtless are as if dead already. The wise having clearly understood this delight in awareness and find joy in the knowledge of the noble ones. These wise ones, meditative, persevering, always using strong effort, attain nirvana, the supreme peace and happiness."
