Don Quixote

Poem written 1/20/99 inspired in part by "Don Quixote de la Mancha"

Emerging from the deepest depths of winter
Wriggling free from the grasp of the longest night.
All of nature's creatures sing a song of gladness
Of finding liberty, for a time, from a lamentable plight.

Yet as Fortune's wheel will not stop Her turning
And the darts of love are for Joy and Pain equally sharp.
One day we'll learn to taste and savor each tender morsel
'Til pain comes to meet our joy and sing harmony with heaven's harp.
