Safety Net
by Brooke Yool
Hundreds of feet above
The trees and the ground,
All that worries me
Is hand over foot,
Foot over hand.
Scaling this behemoth
To prove to the world,
To friends and enemies alike,
That I am worthy.
Each step and hold
The barrier between life
And certain death.
Grabbing a weathered
Portion of rock,
I begin to slip
And fall,
Each split second
Seeming like eternity
Spiraling toward the earth.
Will my rope break the fall?
Will the trees?
Or will I be left alone,
Seemingly betrayed
By those who once
Were supportive?
