I first read Rumer Godden when I was in grade school; I found Little Plum in a second-hand store when I was on vacation visiting my grandmother. I loved it: loved the unique, strange cadence of Godden's writing; loved how feisty the characters were (and they were GIRLS); loved the illustrations; loved the description of Belinda's "invalid" tray, with its vase of snowdrops. I didn't find her other books for years (all I can really recall is that in 1991 I stumbled across her autobiographical A Time to Dance, No Time to Weep) but once I realized the depth of her oeuvre, I started devouring everything of hers I could find. I have a gorgeous collection of her novels, mostly vintage hardbacks discovered (for the most part) at library book sales. That's how this list came about; when excavating at those sales, I needed to keep track of which books I already had.
