Preaching Vignettes (Bhakti Lata devi dasi)

Vignette:

A short, descriptive literary sketch; a brief incident or scene.

"How do You Know What You are Doing is Right?"

One evening as I was cleaning up the Electrical Shop, the Shift Electrician asked me "How do you know what you are doing is right?" I knew that he was referring to Krishna consciousness since we had spoken several times. Mostly we had spoken about other living entities on other planets and on the Moon. He is a firm believer in the existence of other life in the Universe and he had told me about some talk radio shows he had listened to and taped. I had agreed with him and told him about the Srimad-Bhagavatam and that the proof that there are other beings in the Universe is spoken about in Srimad-Bhagavatam. I had also told him about Bhagavad-gita and Srila Prabhupada's teachings about Lord Krishna. "Authority," I said. "Just like the authority who taught you about electricity, that authority told you that if you do this, this, and this, when I walk into this room and flip that switch, the light will come on. Authority. We all get information from different authorities. Just like if I want to know who my father is my authority is my mother. I go to my mother and I say 'Mother, who is my father?" She is the authority and she tells me, 'My husband is your father.' If I say, 'No, I want this rich man to be my father,' and if I go to the rich man and say, "Sir, you are my father,' he will think I am a great fool. "So from reading his books, Srila Prabhupada instructed me that if I follow the four regulations which are, no meat, fish or eggs, no illicit sex, no gambling and no intoxication and if in addition to following the four regulations if I chant daily round my beads the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra then my life will be better. So I began living my life according to this prescription and lo and behold, my life got immensely better."

Read Srila Prabhupada's books!

Everything you'll ever want to know is in his books!

At every moment, I bow down to His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, whose lotus feet are my only shelter. May the ocean of mercy found at the lotus feet of our Beloved Gurudeva be our heart's desire birth after birth.

Bhakti-lata devi dasi, having never received previous instruction in Krishna consciousness, read Srila Prabhupadas book Bhagavad-gita As It Is, took his instructions to chant the maha-mantra sixteen rounds daily and has been doing this ever since. This was in 1989, 12 years after Srila Prabhupada left. She works at Bhakti Publishing, PO Box 633, Sweet Home, OR 97386 USA.
