WHAT IS AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL?

AI is a worldwide voluntary human
rights movement that works impartially
for the release of prisoners of conscience,
fair trials for political prisoners and and
end to torture, "disappearances", political
killings and executions.  AI campaigns to
stop anyone being returned to a country
where they would be in danger of these
abuses.  The organization is financed by
its million plus members and supporters
around the world and accepts no money
from governments.

WHAT IS AMNESTY DOING IN MALTA?

Every day thousands of people are mistreated due to their
beliefs.  They are arrested, or taken away from their families without explanation or cause and held as political prisoners, that is prisoners of conscience.  Sometimes they are held in secret, without trial, maybe even tortured or abused.

Fortunately, with the increase in technological communications, it is difficult for these abuses to stay secrets for long.  The Amnesty International group at the University of Malta is sharing in a world wide effort to protect the rights of these individuals, by putting pressure on the officials in each particular case through letters and petitions.
