The Rosary | |||||||
The Rosary is a centuries old Catholic devotion consisting of praying while meditating upon the life of Jesus Christ. The beads are used as a device for counting the number of prayers and keeping your place. The Rosary is an instrument for prayer and is most effective when meditation on the mysteries accompanies the reciting of the prayers. We talk to God when we pray the prayers and we listen to God when we meditate upon the mysteries of His life. There are 3 mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful & Glorious; each consisting of 5 mysteries. JOYFUL The Annunciation The Angel Gabriel greets Mary and informs her that she will give birth to the Christ child. The Visitation Mary, pregnant with child, visits her cousin Elizabeth; herself pregnant with John the Baptist. The Nativity Mary gives birth to the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ. The Presentation Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the temple. The Finding in the Temple Mary and Joseph find Jesus after three days among the teachers of the Temple. SORROWFUL The Agony in the Garden Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane as He sees the sins of all mankind. The Scourging Jesus is scourged and beaten with a whip. The Crowning with Thorns Jesus is cloaked in a robe as a crown of thorns pierces His head. The Carrying of the Cross Jesus is forced to carry the cross to the place of crucifixtion. The Crucifixion Jesus dies upon the cross after an agonizing three hours. GLORIOUS The Resurrection Jesus rises from the dead after three days. The Ascension Jesus ascends into heaven 40 days after His resurrection. The Descent of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles.
