Jim's Fish StoryJim and his huge Bass. It was a sunny day in Cass Lake Minnesota. Laureen cooked Chili for dinner, but she allowed Stephen and I to take the canoe out on Windigo for a little fishing before dinner. The lake was calm with only a mild breeze. About 7:00 some mild clouds formed in the west, blocking the sun. We tried fishing by the East Portage, but caught nothing but tiny panfish. We then paddled the canoe out to a patch of reeds in front of the North Shore Portage. Strangely enough there was someone swimming near the reeds and I thought that he would scare off all the fish. Stephen and I both casted out our black mister twisters with the spinners as we know this is Judd's favorite combination for catching the big northerns. On the third cast, I felt a big tug on his line and a massive fish jumped out of the water. On the third jump the fish threw off the hook and I dragged the empty lure into the boat. I and Stephen started recasting back onto the edge of the reeds to see if we could rehook the fish. On the second cast, I felt a strong tug. He set the hook and started gently, but quickly reeling in the big fish. It jumped three times but could not shake off the mister twister. As the fish neared the boat, Stephen got out the net and scooped the fish into the boat. I contemplated throwing back this trophy fish so it could be caught again by some lucky fisherman, but alas, without a camera in the canoe, Stephen doubted anyone would believe our story. We continued to fish briefly while Stephen in a small northern that we
threw back. Stephen carried the fish up the path back to the cabin. The faded, ancient cabin fish scale was used by Stephen to weigh the fish. The scale stretched to 5 pounds. The broken yard stick had to be patched back together in order to measure the full 19.5 inch length of this monster bass. The fish went on tour. First to the Steefel cabin. There David, David, I,
Sara, and Mary all gave out appreciative oohs and aahs. The fish then went
to John and Alicia's cabin for its final photo session in one piece. I and Stephen were finally able to eat their Chili. After dinner, the fish was filleted and frozen. The following night, cornmeal battered bass was enjoyed by I, Laureen, Philip, Stephen, and Thomas. |
