This card was also printed on light buff and canary but are not catalogued variations.

This is a confusing issue with a variety of colors, card stocks, two dies, and two different types of surcharges from a number of different canceling machines. Care should be taken in determining the correct variation.

UX29 2c red Jefferson on buff card, issued October 22, 1917. Die I is a rough, coarse impression. The end of the queue slopes sharply downward to the right. Left basal ends of "2" form sharp points. Variations include:

UX29a Lake on cream card, die I
UX28b Vermilion on buff card, die I. This is the rarest of the series.

UX30 2c Jefferson, red on cream card, Die II, issued January 23, 1918. Die II has clear fine lines in the hair. Left basal ends of "2" form balls.

UX31 Same design as UX29, except red on cream card, Die II, issued April 1920 with the 1 cent surcharge. The surcharge is on one line by a canceling machine at Washington, DC. A very rare card in any condition.

UX32 Red on buff card, die I, surcharged in two lines by canceling machine (46 types). Variations include:

UX29a 1c surcharge on 2c vermilion on buff card
UX29a Double surcharge

UX331c surcharge on 2c red on cream card, Die II. Variations include:

UX33a Inverted surcharge
UX33b Double surcharge
UX33c Double surcharge, one surcharge inverted
UX33d Triple surcharge

These are the normal variations for surcharges on the stamp. Copies also exist which have the surcharge inverted in the lower left corner, either alone or in combination with a normal surcharge in many of the 46 different types.
