Jade Buddha

for Anais

once i was held by a woman
i gave her two dollars & a half in cash
& the radio played news from the bbc
or a song by ernest tubb

she asked me what i wanted and i laughed
she said
this dharma this dharma this dreaming
& was silent

the traffic light
encouraged me even when
she bought a jade buddha
at the five & dime

she sat with bared breasts
while I read eliot &
she said that it was money well spent
yes
