World in Flames
An excellent strategic level world war II wargame, designed by Australian Design Group.
House Rules - Extended Victory System:
In our playing group it has been discussed how to make various strategies and theatres such as the Battle of the Atlantic, Sea Lion or conquer Norway etc. more interesting / worthwhile.
In order to try to increase incentive for choosing more interesting (and in
some cases more historical) strategies and builds, we have (inspired by various
other systems) tried to add to the WiF victory system. The aim here is
to include some historical flavor and to provide opportunities to play what
is usually not 100% optimal strategies in terms of winning without losing to
much VP-wise.
In particular:
- no predetermined endturn
- more BoA / allied CONV-lines to USSR
- more allied strat.-bombing
and to a lesser extend:
- more US non-CV naval-build
- more active use of Chinese PARTs
- Norway campaign
- Japanese hunt CONVs
and others
The rules are available below.
These rules does require a bit of additional bookkeeping, but it is not
much, and is usually just about writing down a few numbers at the end of
each turn.
The VP-system below assumes playing without var. reorg and PiF(using A-bomb
and V-wpn though), and with WiFCON gas, but it can easily be adjusted if
playing with other options.
Also, we are currently using it for the first time, so no playtest lies
behind the numbers - they probably have to be tweaked.
The idea is to reward play that the group wish to see during the game, so the strategies and tactics are not focusing only on playing most efficient compared to RaW victory conditions, but there are room for interesting strategies and exploring aspects of the game that are sub-optimal if using non-modified RaW-victory conditions. So the below rules should not be seen as a fixed rule set, but rather they reflect the direction that we want the game to take in our group - other groups probably have different views on this, and can thus adjust the victory conditions to lead the game in other directions to match their taste.
