   Lt. ROY STEINMETZ (Gunnery Officer)
A brief history of US Navy aircraft carriers  that were known by the names ; Baby Flattops ; Jeep Carriers and  also Mighty Midgets did the routine work, patrol work, scouting and escorting  of convoys, that the larger fleetypes could not do. It was often a joke that the CVE stood for combustible , vulnerable  and expendable.. It was the Jeeps and their crews that provided fighter and close  air support for amphibious landings and served as aircraft transports as the tempo of the carrier war mounted. The USS Bogue CVE-9 was the first escort carrier to sink a U-Boat in     W.W.II. It sank the I-52, the largest Jap sub, that has been found 3 miles down and  was   purported to have been carrying gold bullion. The USS Bogue sank the last enemy submarine  of the war as well. Its wartime record included Japanese cargo subs and German subs for a    total of 13 which resulted in the award of a Presidential Citation. The first operable   unit proved to be the USS Bogue CVE-9, joining the fleet in March of 1943. The idea of a  roving U-Boat killer group composed of an escort carrier equipped with Wildcat fighters and Avengers that could use bombs, depth charges, or torpedoes screened by old destroyers     and destroyer escorts, was a sound one. Admiral Royal Ingersoll's command to the Captains of all the escort carriers was that they take offensive action against the enemy. It was  time for these unique warships to show what they could do against the wolf-packs that were sinking allied merchant vessels. The Battle of the Atlantic had now begun in earnest!
THE SIGNALMAN WOULD HOIST THE FOX FLAG, AS WE WERE  ABOUT TO ENGAGE THE ENEMY. THE DESTROYER ESCORTS WOULD BE ALERTED THAT OUR SHIP WOULD  BE TURNING INTO THE WIND TO; LAUNCH OUR AIRCRAFT. OUR TASK GROUP WOULD DEPLOY THEIR FORCES AND THE DESTROYER ESCORTS WOULD CONVERGE ON THE U-BOAT AND DROP DEPTH CHARGES. THE  MIGHTY MIDGET  USS BOGUE WOULD NOW BE TRANSFORMED FROM A SHIP OF MANY DUTIES  TO A UNIQUE WARSHIP, CAPABLE OF DAMAGING AND SINKING THE ENEMY'S U-BOATS AND SURFACE  VESSELS. OUR PLANES WERE USED FOR RECONNAISSANCE RANGING MANY MILES IN ORDER TO SIGHT AND  THEN BOMB ANY VISIBLE SUBMARINES THAT MAY HAVE INTRUDED INTO OUR WATERS.
