Although the least powerful, microcomputers are the most widely used and the fastest growing type of computer.  There are two categories of microcomputers- desktop and portable.

• Desktop computers are small enough to fit on top or along the side of a desk yet too big to carry around.  Although the distinction is now blurring,  desktop computers can be one of two categories- Personal computers and Workstations.
  
• Portable computers are microcomputers that are small enough and light enough to to move easily from one place to another.  There are three categories portable computers:
  • Notebooks
  • Sub-notebooks
  • Personal Digital Assistants
    • Palmtop
    • Hand-held
