Decision Support Systems
- Decision Support Systems (DSS) are used to analyze data in an
organization.
- Help managers get answers to unexpected and nonrecurring kinds of
problems.
- Spreadsheet and database programs can be used for analysis in this
type of system.
- A group decision support system (GDSS) can be used for collective work
of a manager team.
- Example: finding out which territories are not meeting
their quotas.
- A Decision Support System consists of four parts:
- User
Someone who make decisions, often a middle-level manager.
- System Software
The operating system of a computer such as Windows 95
- Data
Transaction processing (internal data) or data from outside the
organization (external data).
- Decision Model
Help middle-level managers implement top managers' long-range plans.
- Strategic - Assist top-level managers in long-range planning.
Example: Stating company objective or planning plant locations
- Tactical - Assist middle-level managers in controlling the work of
the organization.
Example: financial planning or sales promotion planning
- Operational - Assist lower-level managers in accomplishing
day-to-day activities.
Example: evaluating/maintaining quality control in a plant.
