Grammar and Word Processing

Using Microsoft Word, do Exercises 1, 2, and 3 on the handouts from the teacher. Follow the instructions very carefully on the handouts. The notes below are meant to help you complete the tasks.

Grammar Notes: Writers sometimes make mistakes in subject-verb agreement. This especially occurs
  1. in sentences with compound subjects: "John and Julia are very close.";
  2. or with verbs separated from subjects: "The coins on the table are mine."

Be careful! Sometimes a subject looks like a compound subject, but acts like a single subject. This occurs when the elements of the subject together form a widely recognized single set. The 'compound subject' is really the name of the set. Therefore, a singular verb is used.

Some examples:

  1. Ham and eggs is my father's favourite breakfast dish.
  2. Black and white has become a popular photo style in recent years.
