Tailored Reading

Why This Is a Temporary Web Site

May 25, 1999

The purpose of this temporary (and developing) web site is to enable guests to have advanced knowledge of Tailored Reading as the ideas are entered on the Internet, and prior to transfer to the permanent location with Study Wire, a future educational megasite. It is hoped that the concepts will attract the interest of those concerned with the problem of illiteracy on various levels, and who are perhaps seeking more productive, cost-effective ways to help at-risk readers learn to read.

"Bells and whistles" (animation, audio, video, etc.) to make the information more attractive and understandable, will be added when the site is transferred to Study Wire, where the actual content of many academic subjects (e.g. biology and history), authored by top professors, will also be able to be accessed without charge.

It is hoped that the imaginations of at least a few teachers, parents, and volunteers might be stirred by the uniqueness of the system as it unfolds, despite the current bare text.

More than a vehicle to be used only for tutor training and to obtain ideas concerning instruction, the permanent site will also contain a changing supply of new and innovative supplementary activities and selections such as plays, stories, jokes, card games and tricks, songs, puzzles, and other exciting material. Pupils at various stages of reading proficiency following Tailored Reading principles, will be able to read, participate, and enjoy material written at their specific ability levels. For example, a child who has mastered the words on the preprimer list is practically guaranteed of being able to read the selections composed only of those words.

It would be very helpful to Jeff Reiter, the developer, to receive feedback concerning the ideas presented, or problems you may have with the web site itself. His email address is:
