The first ever NerfWar games were contested a week ago last Thursday
night. Although there were only five participants, adrenaline was
pumped furiously and mercy was in short supply.
The two games played were "Last Man Standing" and "Capture the Flag". Last Man Standing is played until every player is taken out but one, or time expires. Capture the Flag involves two teams, whose objectives are to steal all of their opponents flags. "Respawning" is allowed in CTF, which means that players can go to a pre-designated area to "respawn" to join the game in progress if they happen to get killed.
In the first match of LMS, Amy Badger was the first casualty, suffering a stealthy but effective snipe to the spine delivered courtesy of Paul Godavari Camping Supplies Incorporated. Eric Badger and John Marshall were mortal combatants all night long, and the first game was no exception. Mutually assured destruction was also a commonly played out theme. They both fell in the rain of nerf. When Jon Fleming stumbled in on PGCSI's well-positioned trap, he thought he was done for. Fortunately, PG's weapon was either misfiring or poorly aimed, and Flem barely escaped a certain, sudden death. What ensued thereafter is still hotly debated, but it was a close firefight, ending in our first casualty. PG, who had decided earlier that eye protection was for nerds, (as if NerfWars isn't!) paid the price of pain, and henceforward, elected to wear the super-spiffy specs.
Other highlights of the evening included one John Marshall heavily laden with a plethora of weapons in an attempt to emulate his heros, Keanu Reeves and Arnold Schwarzenegger, trundling along like a loud, mobile yard sale. Realizing this mode of combat was a tad ineffective, he yielded to a new, "more Steven Segal"-like style and moved stealthily through the playing arena like a pistol-packing ninja, until he was discovered by giggling spectators.
Erik Badger amassed the greatest number of kills, but was often seen running away like a skittish kitten when he discovered he had run out of ammo.
Amy Badger was not as effective as she had hoped. "I think I need to improve on my aim", she was heard to say.
Everyone had a great time, though Capture the Flag would have been better with more participants.
Our next event is this Friday, March 2, at 6:30 on the 13th floor.
We have lots of extra pairs of goggles and safety glasses, and way more
guns and ammo than we'll ever be able to use. So come on out and
join the fun!
