Filigree is a very complicated technique. It's formalized floral designs are made of the thinest twisted gold and silver wire and soldered onto a metal background, The gold chalice made by Ivan Fomin is a classical example of Moscow filigree in the mid-fifteenth century. It was donated to the Trinity St. Sergius Lavra by the Grand Prince of Moscow, Vasily II the Blind. The base of the chalice is engraved with the following inscription: "Made by Ivan Fomin".
