I was so pleased to find your site on the web. The reason is that I have been looking for Snyegurochka (the Snow Maiden) for quite some time and have been unable to find a version that was anything like the one I remember. All the others I have come acros seem terribly modernized and without intrigue. Yours has been the only one close to what i remember. Tell me, is the version on your website the origional? I am trying to find a purchase it for a close friend. The one I remember from childhood was the sa e as the one you have, except at the end. The peasant couple realized she could not live in the springs and finally gave her up to go live where it was colder(thinking they would never see her again), but (to their joy) she came back every year when in gr w cold and lived with them again. I am married to Mary Woodman of Norway Maine a descendant of the first Woodman, Edward, who came to Newbury in 1635. He came with his brother Archelaus who had no children. I have in my possesion two genealogies of the Woodman family, one dated 1856 tracing from 1635 (it refers to Joshua Coffin) and one of Willard Woodman.There is a great Woodman genealogy book at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston which is probably in their mail lending program. The statue is the famous symbol of Soviet Socialism: a muscular and dynamic couple s riding forward, raising aloft the Hammer & Sickle of Soviet industry and agriculture. Marble Lady (oil painting by Jaisini) In his art, Jaisini insists on overcoming of the dehumanization, the suppression of sensuality. In every historical period there are ideas and problems which are expressed and will not come to pass. Jaisini seeks to identify this idea in the present, excavate it from the past, and invent it in a new way for the future. In the murky, anxious world of ours, in the midst of the soul's confusions and the multiplying moral losses, the artist seeks and always finds some big and small islands of "eternal truths," and asserts the indestructible age-long parables that reveal these truths in the new light, in his own system of sign-images. I realized that the more you look at "Gleitzeit" works and think, the more you see, feel, and understand, but never completely, as given work always has too many aspects. There is always some kind of "space" in the painting, on which the observer feels free, without a persistent prompting of the artist, to use his own system of perception. To me, "Marble Lady" seems as a late modern modification of the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion, who used his illusionist skill to satisfy a private fantasy of the ideal woman. Disappointed by the imperfections of the opposite sex, he created Galatea out of marble and during a festival in honor of Venus, Pygmalion prayed for a woman as perfect as his statue. Venus answered his prayer by bringing his statue to life and eliminated the boundary between reality and illusion. In Jaisini's "Marble Lady," the object of the intense desire remains alluring, yet perpetually distant. Desire of the others is often imagined in terms of a fetish. The so-called civilized man can be considered in his delight of female form. In "Marble Lady," we find the two types of spectatorship: the masculine and the non-masculine. Therefore, an image of the woman is defined through the desire of both spectators, the unmanly poet and the savage who may well be a subscriber to "Penis Power Quarterly." The statue of Galatea was and still is the symbol of fictional perfection, a result of the search for ideal woman that parallels the artist's own creative urge. A post-feminist culture has found out a way to reinvent the woman as she once was: eager to appear physically attractive, the man-made woman. The "Marble Lady" enables male domination by being unreachable and desirable. The construction of such a female identity fiction can inspire both high and low natures. In all of his works, Jaisini unites the high and low principles, integrating art into the material life, breaking out of art's ivory tower. "Marble Lady" is a compact, pyramidal composition of the "trio." As in all of his works, Jaisini subdues the figures to the articulation of line and its rhythmic connection between forms in space, a sort of analytical process, based on the line swinging which starts up ideas, shapes, and colors. The line arabesques are these highly individual textures of Jaisini's art. A decorative role of the painting's color is to create the temperature contrast of the heated environment with the marble-cold statue. In modern and postmodern times, there are increasingly fewer outlets for sensual urges and desires which lay at the origin of human society that imposes restrictions. Sexuality remained beyond the scope of most art history. Your web site is quite the most beautiful thing I have seen. The beaded purses are glorious. I have only just found out about these beaded bags and purses. So many sites on the net are on about knitted bags. Would you kindly tell me how yours are made as hey are much more like the ones I had in mind. I have communicated with a supplier and told her I imagined that the purses used Mill Hill beads. She said "Oh, no, they are far too expensive". Now I see you use them. It would have been wise to leave the political element from your page. You may be a pacifist at heart, but the reality of the Kosovo situation is clear. NATO intervened on behalf of the millions of ethnic Albanians that were, and still are, being slaugh ered at the hands of their own government. NATO gave their leader an option. He did not take that option, and instead continued his reign of terror upon innocent lives. If we, as human beings, do not intervene...who will? Isn't that what World War II as about? Hitler and his regime killed millions of innocent people, because of their race, creed, and religion. Or does the word "holocaust" not mean anything? I suppose you would have sat quietly, and sang hymns as the bodies of innocent Jews were pac ed off into the gas chambers. If you don't like America, then perhaps you should move to Russia. Perhaps the constant threat of oppressive communism is more suited to your taste.

I have just recently got back into SW radio after a break of about 10 years (I went to University, emigrated, got married etc...) and I found your page on the Voice of Russia. I used to listen to LRC (Listeners Request Club) on Radio Moscow which was run by Vasily Strelnikov (he renamed the show Vasilys Weekend, I don't know if he is still working there). I still have some Radio Moscow badges and a photo of me, him and my father when we visited Radio Moscow in 1988. While we were there he interviewed us for LRC although I never got to hear the final broadcast because I was still in the USSR at the time it as on. Kathy, there's a source in Seattle- don't worry, she does a lot of mail order- that I have bought steel beads from very reasonably- it's Empyrean Beads and you can look it up under that. Her name is Sammi and she's very good. I have also used glass bead in a colour called 'pewter' with steel beads and you couldn't tell the difference. I am a new beader and am trying to do that diamond pattern on the bottoms of old purses I repair. I'm having trouble cuz the hem I make is turning out too full and it doesn't lie flat. There must be a rule. I started in one bead at the bottom of the pu se, strung on 7, then reattached to the purse bottom three beads over (for a total of four). How many should I have used? I've done some beaded garments, and dabbled with off-loom techniques, but a friend of mine at church has been doing awsome amulet purses and a friend in WI has been doing beaded bottles. So, when I was laid up this week (and I can't stand to just be stil when I'm "laid up"), I pulled out my stash of #11s and just made up as I went along. It's not "perfect", but it's also not bad for a first attempt! I'm certainly inspired to do more. I am expecially interested in researching beads and their uses from 600 -1600 A.D., but I need to be able to document what I find, via paintings, written materials, artifacts, etc. Got any ideas? I became aware of this site thru my interest in Russian stocks. As it happens I became aware of my existence in Ft, Williams, ME. It was a blue world then --the sea and the sky, and I was a very little fellow. One day I was looking out the window when my mother approached, and I thought, "She's in charge here." I could not have been more than two. It is my earliest memory. (We lived within about 300 yds of the lighthouse at Porland Head. That would have been about 1924-5). I see no real need to apologize that the tales may offend some people, but by including that preface then it will be up to them to determine things. Children seem to know intrinsically that which is right and that which is wrong, it is us adults putting our beliefs on them that manage to screw things up. I design my own stitchery charts and have been looking for books which could give me information on traditional Russian folk art (ie. colors, motif , etc.), could you possibly point out any that I might find useful? I was mor than pleased to find a Pushkin's admirerer in the web. your translations are great, but I've found a small mistake in the line Now, like a beast, it calls You have not exactly translated russian word "zavoet" It is a form of word "voet" what means "howls". Please correct this line. But remember, I am impressed by the magnificent decorations. Will be glad to visit you again.

To the person below who left the anonymous message in my guestbook: I can't email you because you didn't have the courtesy of leaving your name. The design below, (and quite a few other designs on my site), are very similar to designs on several other people's sites because when we find new techniques, we share them with ach other. In the design in question, we all started with the same pattern, and applied our own techniques to it, then compared them. We did the same with our stained glass designs, our jewels, our Swedish stickers, and other sets. We do that frequently s we can all learn from each other. If you follow my graphics links page, you will see links to those sites, as we also link to each other. We are constantly looking for new ideas, and sharing them. That is why I have scanned the lace, paper, seashells, ph tographs and other things on my site. So that anyone can use them.
