Laughing
(c)by Leslie Samford 1997

I lay here in my blackness
trying to reach you
Holding my hand out
As far as I can
I can see you standing there
your face in mock concern
I crawl up the dirty walls of my pit
trying my hardest to reach you
to grab on to anything I can
And you still stand there
the closer I get the more unreal you seem
Finially, my fingers grasp your black boot
and I feel hope for the first time
since I was pushed into my pit
But before I can get a steady grip
You kick out your leg
and I fall...forever it seems
until I crash into the rocky surface
my last image in this life
is you walking away-laughing
