  • Harmony in the Church
    Who runs the church?
What is the NT form of church gov’t?

    Biblical church leadership
    Acts 6:

    Deacons
    Primary function is service

  • designated by the church
  • delegated by the pastors

  •

The need for the office of deacon came about because the apostles were not able the meet the needs of the congregation.

Practical function may include advising and recommending:

  • Never above, apart from, or against pastoral leadership
  • Never above or apart from congregational consent

  •

    Danger Points:

  • "representation"
  • "THE BOARD"
  • Lack of respect

  •

    The People
    The church (congregation):

  • selects its deacons (Acts 6)
  • sends missionaries (Acts 13)
  • maintains its services (1Cor 11)
  • disciplines its members (2Cor15)
  • manages its finances 2Cor 8,

  •

    The Pastor
    I Tim 5; Heb 13:7,17;
    Pastoral leadership

  • Seen in his titles (shepherd, elder, overseer)
  • Seen in his activities (find the verbs e.g. rule)

  •

Eph 4:11-13 gives some ideas about how a pastor should live and what he should be.

8 things you can do for your pastor

  • Recognize him (1Thess 5:12
  • Respect him
  • Reward him (1Tim 5:17)
  • Remember him (Heb 13:7)
  • Respond to him (Heb 13:17
  • Relinquish (yield) to him
  • Regard him (Heb 13:24)
  • Receive him (Col 4:10)
