Invoke

What constitutes
being a Christian? What was it about Christians that so threatened Saul as to pursue them
to destruction? What distinguished them?
Saul was known as "he that destroyed them that invoked this name in
Jerusalem..." (9:21).
The word "invoke" speaks a lesson. What makes it unique from just "to
call" is a simple prefix. Added upon it is (epi) "upon," revealing a
"special
interest on the part of the doer of an action in which he is engaged (Vine's)." It is
not a mere calling out into thin air, but a calling upon a
One, a personal invitation, an appeal to Him. Saul was out to destroy those who were
appealing to His Name!
When we appeal, invoke, we are LEANING. It follows that we won't be able to stand unless
we are supported from Him, in the authority in His Name. He is drawn upon. Christianity is
not merely saying so, but a heart lean UPON Him.
Listen again: "Call UNTO Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty
things that you do not know" (Jer 33:3). When we invoke Him, we enter upon His
dancefloor and begin the dance...
