But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Wanting a Life to Count

by Cathy Vinson

MATE` (Greek rootword) gives forth a displeasing sense to one approaching middle-age. It speaks of that which in its end will be void of result, to no purpose. Whatever the effort and years put into it, it will end up in vain. Where this lies in Scripture reveals a strong indication that judgment has already been parcelled out, and it would be wise to stay away from those things that would make a life futile.

What are some of these things already determined a fault, a folly, vain, or to no purpose? The thoughts "of the wise by the standards of this age"..."the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise are futile" (1 Cor 3: 20); questionings, strifes about the law and genealogies..."unprofitable and useless" (Tit 3:9); religion with an unbridled tongue - a tongue without a
tight rein (Ja 1:26); and a manner of life following the traditions handed down from the forefathers (1 Pet 1:18).

We don't want to spend our lives on that which does not profit anything. "They worship Me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men" (Matt 15:9). By not giving glory to God nor giving Him thanks leads to a people's thinking becoming futile (Rom 1:21). How terrible to have a lifetime of thought processes never leading to anywhere but futility!

To varying degrees most desire a life that counts for something, to want to leave this earth with some aspect of God's Kingdom progressed, "having served God's purpose in our own generation" (Acts 13:36). May we put aside what which will NEVER produce, actually run from it, as we begin another hopeful year of His grace.

" the Lord knows the thoughts of the wise are futile"

1 Corinthians 3: 20

We don't want to spend our lives on that which does not profit anything
