But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Watch Your Own
Feet by Cathy Vinson |
"They tie their
shoes the same way you do," a father consoles his competitive son. How often we
compare ourselves to others! And while we do, our shoelaces remain untied...we lose what
we could be. We need to watch our own feet. Scripture tells us: "But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold, for I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked" (Ps 73:2,3). The psalmist almost lost his God-given footing when he was clutched by the welfare of the undeserving. It IS trying to see another bountiful blessed in an area where we lack. Jesus said to Peter, "What is that to you? You must follow Me" (Jn 21:22). We are responsible for our own path, not another's. Are our feet walking after Jesus? "When they compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. We however...will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us" (2 Cor 10:12,13). What is our assignment? Are we fulfilling it? "Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, for each one should carry his own load" (Gal 6:4,5). Why is another affecting us? distracting us? causing us to lose our foothold? Watch your own feet. "Test our own actions." The security we mistakenly seek through comparing is there for us. It's in following the freshly-trod steps of Jesus, our Lord.
